History:
Evie’s first memory was waking up in a bed in a home that was not hers. A man, who introduced himself as Mud Dog, had found her unconscious in an abandoned grocery store. She had nothing on her except a wristband that said 3V13 and a leather pouch tied to her ankle. The pouch was full of jewels, money, and other valuables. It was quite the mystery, right off the bat.
Evie immediately tried to regain her memories. After all, if she had no idea who she was, she probably had amnesia. Right? So, she was determined to get those precious memories back. She thanked Mud Dog for helping her out, took half of the currency, and left. A few weeks later, he found her in a brothel. It turned out, she sometimes got shakes and her brain would shut down; then, she’d wake up a bit of time later and carry on like nothing even happened. She’d even finish the same exact sentence she collapsed in the middle of, even if it was hours later. She’d been taken back to the brothel when she’d passed out, and offered up for sale.
Mud Dog happened to be passing by, recognized her, and just decided to buy her to get her out of the situation. From ten on, Evie was content to hang out with him. It was better than being vulnerable out by herself, especially if she had this disability.
After a few months of living with Mud Dog though, she found herself catching feelings. She didn’t want to give up on herself yet, but she knew she wanted to stay with him. So she made the decision to leave in the middle of the night, to rip off the bandaid as quick as possible, and get it over with. She’d come back when she figured out who she was.
She managed to track down a name; Nathan Cameron. A scientist who worked in the wasteland working with all sorts of mutations and experiments. A man working under Cameron was determined that he could figure out a way to successfully do brain transplants.
She eventually found one Dr. Hansen, who used to work under Cameron himself. He explained to her that a second scientist named Quinn, the one who was working on brain transplant technique, had left the lab and went to start his own. It was most likely that she came from Quinn’s lab.
She also underwent an exam, and learned that her brain was not a human brain. It was completely synthetic. The body she occupied wasn’t even hers; she was just a hard drive that was piloting around a dead body with no brain.
So…where was the original brain that belonged to this body?
Was she really Evie? Or just lines of code?
What happened to the owner of this body?
Was she even really alive? Was she even human? A person? Or a computer?
So she didn’t have amnesia; she literally had no memories, because at this point in time her brain was only a few months old. Even if she had intelligence and knowledge, she’d never read a book in her life because she’d only been active for a few months. She was…it was…
It was…a lot to take in, admittedly. And now that she had no other leads and nothing left to learn from Dr. Hansen, she left. To go back to Mud Dog and his junkyard and dog pack.
It was familiar, and she wanted familiar. She just…didn’t know who she was anymore. What she was.
