Søren grew up with two loving parents. While money was not in extra supply, he always had what he needed and most of the things he wanted. Living in a simple home, he learned to appreciate what he had and who he knew. His parents both worked to provide for the family, so he learned at quite a young age to be independent and resourceful. And he was happy for it; it meant he was comfortable with himself and enjoyed his own company. And he could take the family dog out if he didn’t want to be alone. Besides, his power meant that he didn’t really have to worry about violence; with the ability to spring shards and spikes of obsidian from his body anywhere he wanted to, he had his own weapon on him at all times.
When Søren was ten, he began to feel wrong. He was aching and in pain a lot of the time, and he was growing stiff. It was quickly discovered that his power, the obsidian inside of him, was growing more than it was supposed to. After all, bodies grow during childhood; but his power was growing more than he was. His body simply couldn’t handle it, and it was leaking into systems it wasn’t supposed to. Coming close to his sinuses, his ears, creeping into his mouth and throat…it hurt. Having glass rubbing in his body where it wasn’t supposed to hurt.
Unfortunately there was no way to magically fix it. And as a ten year old, Søren learned that this was going to kill him one day. There was no stopping it. However, he could postpone it and help himself if he stayed in shape and exercised a lot.
By grinding any excess obsidian in his body from glass into sand, he could alleviate a lot of pain and make himself more flexible. It wouldn’t stop, the growth, but at least he could fight back somehow. It beat having surgery every week.
So, Søren took the advice and began to train his body. He swam, lifted weights, ran, did yoga, danced, did everything he could to keep mobile and keep the creeping glass from killing him.
At fourteen, Søren lost his mother to cancer. At sixteen, he lost his father to cancer as well. They were both young for being parents, but Søren learned quickly that they’d been especially susceptible to it. And, like them, he’d die an early death.
After two years in the foster care system, he was released to go to university. At first, he figured he would try to get into oncology. But after realizing that he wasn’t suited for patient interaction, he decided instead to be a trainer in a rehabilitation facility and moonlight as a volunteer for a children’s shelter, where he met Judai.
