As a child, Valtha never knew her home planet or her parents or even her actual species. As a child she was sold to the owner of a massive lounge called The Tranquil Tide. The Tranquil Tide is an enormous complex of rooms and sectors dedicated to different levels and types of relaxation, including a tea house, bathhouse, bar, brothel, and more. The Tide is hugely sought after by many clients, often drawing in the richest of the rich and the higher classes. The Tide is home to thousands of workers of every gender and species, from the ever rare humans all the way from Earth to the genderless gelatinous blobs of sector 98.
She was raised by the nurses there assigned to taking care of the girls. As a child she worked in food service and sanitation, tailing one of the older employees every day and doing what she was told. When she reached the proper age for serving, she moved to be trained as a bartender, waitress, and “tender,” what the Tide called their women who served as sexual partners on the side. Valtha, being owned by the Tide, was fine with her life. She had everything she needed; friends, food, water, lodging, luxuries. She simply did not know the outside by herself, only knowing it through her clients. Since the day she had been sold to the Tide, she never went outside. There were simulated parks with fresh air and false sunlight for that.
When she came of age to be considered an adult, she was called by the owner of the Tide for a private conversation. It was explained to her that, since she was now an adult, as a slave she would be permitted to work for her freedom and pay off her initial purchase price through work. After her food and lodging costs were deducted from her wages, the rest would go toward paying for herself. Once that goal was reached, she would be free.
Since Valtha was already at an equilibrium, she had to work harder to begin saving for her freedom. She took extra clients, extra shifts, and did things she was not comfortable with or proud of to make the extra money for the Tide to earn her escape. She dreamed every night of seeing the stars, meeting new people, eating all kinds of different food, and traveling to different planets.
Eventually, she reached the goal. The owner called her in again and explained that now since she was done, she was free. She tore up Valtha’s ownership papers and congratulated her, then wished her luck. This was when Valtha realized; she knew nothing about the outside. She had nothing- no money, no experience, no friends or family, no transport, no housing, nothing. She barely even had an identity. She was stuck.
Valtha remained at The Tranquil Tide, knowing that despite having her freedom, she would never be free. On that day she withdrew into herself and put on a false smile, instead simply willing to tolerate the life she had. After all, she convinced herself, it could be worse.
